I attended Otis Art Institute with Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degrees. I gained expertise in drawing, painting, sculpture, art history, graphic design, film, video and animation. My work has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the U.S. and parts of Europe. Presently I have been a Professor of Art at Bakersfield college, since 1971.

My work varies widely in subject matter and technique. The visual vocabulary is also wide ranging. My compositions focus on specific visual limitations. As an example, a series may concentrate on value, light, form and texture.

Because I am motivated by environments, the element in which my compositions live dictates a variety of materials. As in the use of musical instruments in an orchestra, certain tools (instruments) are better suited to make specific ‘sounds’ than others.

The development of value, as an example, may require charcoal (an instrument) to create aerial perspective, but in some cases, the addition of a wet media could assist charcoal in allowing textural relationships to occur. Watercolor, versus oil or acrylics, allows me to explore value and texture in ways unique to the media. Mixing media, like combining strings and wind instruments, allows for more subtle variations.
